In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires

a. "Assessing Authority" means any officer appointed under the Sales Tax Act to assist the Commissioner , who is empowered by the Commissioner under that Act to call for returns, make assessments, issue demand notices and recover demand dues, within the area of his jurisdiction;
